The Oratorio di Santa Maria in Valle is an 8th-century Lombard religious building located in Cividale del Friuli. It is the most important and best-preserved example of Lombard architecture, consisting of a raised presbytery and a square main chamber with vaulted ceilings. The building was likely begun under Aistulf's rule, Duke of Friuli and King of the Lombards, and served as a Palatine Chapel for Lombard Dukes and the king’s functionaries. The interior walls are decorated with frescoes dating to the mid-8th century, which represent some of the oldest surviving early medieval wall paintings in Italy, executed in the Byzantine tradition. The stucco sculptures date primarily to the mid-8th century, around 750-776 AD, and are a key example of Lombard figural art. The Oratory of Santa Maria in Valle is a key component of UNESCO's Longobards in Italy serial site.
