The Vittoria Lighthouse, or Faro della Vittoria, is an active lighthouse serving the Gulf of Trieste. It towers 223 feet (68m) high and is one of the tallest lighthouses in the world. Its construction was inspired by the Italian victory in World War I, initially planned for the Istrian coast near Pula. The Vittoria Lighthouse was designed by Trieste architect Arduino Berlam and then further developed by Guido Cirilli, who oversaw the construction.
The idea to build it was inspired by the Italian victory in World War I, and it was built on the remains of the former Austro-Hungarian fort Kressich on the Hill of Gretta. The lighthouse serves as a memorial to those who lost their lives at sea during World War I, as evidenced by the inscription 'SPLENDI E RICORDA I CADUTI SUL MARE MCMXV-MCMXVIII,' which means 'Shine and remember the fallen at sea 1915-1918. The lighthouse underwent restoration from 1979 to 1986 and was open to the public thereafter.
