Stand in the middle of the town of Pinzano Al Tagliamento, a town in northeastern Italy, and you might miss it. In the lush hills that mark the landscape, one structure stands tall, until you look closely: an incomplete, half-finished monument. This is the Sacrario incompiuto di Pinzano, an uncompleted ossuary located in the heart of this small town, a testament to a war fought over a century ago. Its creator was Robert Tischler, a German architect whose vision was to create an ossuary fit for the remains of approximately 30,000 soldiers who died in World War I. The German government chose the town of Pinzano for its scenic location, overlooking the Tagliamento river, as the site for constructing the structure.
