Nemenčinė Hillfort: A Timeless Jewel in Lithuania's Heart

Nemenčinė Hillfort, set in the Northern region of Lithuania, has sheltered the local community since at least the late 13th century. Originally constructed during the Iron Age and the Late Middle Ages, this hillfort once served as the residence for local landlords. Archaeologist Pranas Kulikauskas discovered nearby settlement remains during excavations in 1952-1954, including pottery shards, evidence of wooden structures, and parts of the settlement’s ditch. The European Union-funded project 'Adaptation of Nemenčinė Hillfort with its Outer Bailey for Visits' has revitalized the site for residents and visitors, offering more than just a history lesson, but also opportunities for community events, traditions, and contemporary experiences.
