Antakalnis Bunker Complex: A Vilnius Fortress Hidden in Plain Sight

The Antakalnis Bunker Complex, a protected cultural monument in Vilnius, was constructed between 1924 and 1926. Known as a registered site by the Cultural Heritage Department in 2008, the complex was designed to safeguard the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Stanislaus and Saint Vladislaus from potential looting during the Lithuanian occupation. One of the bunkers now houses a room on the second floor, displaying original fireplaces. The complex is made up of five interconnected bunkers, each equipped with a ventilation system. The whole complex spans an area of 11.15 hectares and has served as a fortress for the Lithuanian Self-Defense Force.
