Heroes of Cavite and Santiago de Cuba: Spanish-American War Memorial in

The Monument to the Heroes of Cavite and Santiago de Cuba, a public art and war memorial in Cartagena, Spain, was erected following a popular subscription campaign in 1919. Funded by King Alfonso XIII and other high-profile subscribers, the monument honors the naval squadrons commanded by Patricio Montojo and Pascual Cervera during the 1898 Spanish–American War. The monument, standing 15 meters tall, features a stone architectural base and bronze sculptural elements, with the obelisk on top inscribed ‘a los heroicos marinos de cavite y santiago de cuba, 1898’ ('To the Heroic Sailors of Cavite and Santiago de Cuba, 1898'). The lateral inscriptions consist of a compilation of casualties in both battles. The monument was unveiled in 1923 and was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural in 2020.
