Built in the heart of Piazza Garibaldi in Livorno, the Garibaldi Monument graced the cityscape on the 25th of August, 1889. The statue was the work of Augusto Rivalta, with Angiolo Badaloni designing its base. The pedestal, in a neoclassical style, is fashioned from granite. Compared to later statues, this one projects a more austere mien. Inscribed on the pedestal is: 'To Giuseppe Garibaldi, from the citizens of Livorno, 1889'. The monument was erected post Garibaldi's passing in 1882. The Livorno city council made the decision to construct the monument following a public subscription. Initially, the plan was to situate the monument in Piazza Rengoni, but the city's folks showed a preference for a more central and popular location.
