Sun-Worshipper Margaretha: A Dramatic Statue at Dramaten

Margaretha Krook, a pioneering Swedish actress, stands outside the Dramaten theatre, basking in the sun, as she often did during her breaks during her performances. The statue, created by Swedish artist Marie-Louise Ekman, was unveiled on May 17th, 2002, Dramaten’s 214th birthday, a year after Krook’s passing. The statue, 5.6 meters tall, is dressed in a quilted jacket, long skirt, and high heels – resembling the character she often portrayed on stage. Her head and upper arms are draped in a large shawl, adding a touch of elegance and mystery to the sculpture. The statue is pipe-fitted with a heating system, keeping it warm at 37 degrees Celsius and free of snow. This was intended to mimic Krook’s warm and welcoming presence.
