In the year 1679, the Chancelleria found its genesis in Valladolid, skillfully designed by the architect Nicolás Bueno to replace an existing prison. The new structure, characterized by a quadrangular design, a central courtyard, two floors, and towers on either side, was created to expand the prison's capacity and accommodate the archive. In 1935, the Chancelleria stopped its function as a prison. Decades later, in 1988, the Chancelleria was metamorphosed into a library, bearing the name Biblioteca Reina Sofía while maintaining its historic roots and infusing a new life into this grand edifice.
