Welcome to the Map Rock Petroglyphs Historic District, hailing from the territory of Canyon County, Idaho. This cryptic stone relic dates back to the Northern Shoshone before the 19th-century Westward expansion. It was given its alias, 'Map Rock', by Robert Limbert in the 1920s. If genuine, this ancient artifact could be one of the oldest pieces of history remaining. A misguided project to dig it up and move it to Boise, or to hack off slices for the State Capitol grounds, didn't see the light of day in 1924.
Fortunately, the rock and the surrounding 38 acres joined Canyon County in 2012. In 2018, the National Register of Historic Places recognized the Map Rock Petroglyphs Historic District. R.P. Erwin penned Indian Rock Writing in Idaho in 1930, while Don Zuhlke unveiled The Map Rock of Idaho Decoded in 2016. This rock art continues to leave scholars scratching their heads and delights visitors under its mysterious spell.
