This colossal bloke, snapped countless times, is none other than Umbrella Man, the brainchild of John Seward Johnson II. He's been a local beacon since 1983, taking up residence in Pioneer Courthouse Square. Designated as bronze, aluminum, and stainless steel, he portrays a fellow in a suit, umbrella in hand. Umbrella Man is one of seven matches struck by Johnson, owning City of Portland and Multnomah County Public Art Collection. In spite of his mass, he's faced his own catastrophes – in July 1995, he hopped a ride to Stellar Artworks in Van Nuys, California for a day at the spa, returning all shimmery and revitalized. Annual maintenance finds him receiving a bit of cold wax for his gloss. Umbrella Man serves not only as a magnet for tourists but also a symbol for Portland's inhabitants and visitors.
