Back in 2009, the transportation folks of Portland, aka TriMet, collaborated with American artist Cris Bruch to craft a straight-up Portland treasure. Sitting pretty at the crossroads of Southwest 5th Avenue and Southwest Morrison Street, along the Portland Transit Mall, this eye-catching fellow stands tall with a hefty 127 inches (3.2 m) in height, 72 inches (1.8 m) wide, and 37 inches (0.94 m) deep, weighing in at 1,200 pounds. It's no small fry, folks!Nicknamed 'Whistlestop's Organ Teacher', the sculpture's alien-esque, fluted design has earned nods from the blogging crew at Blog Down, curated by the University of Washington Alumni Association. But what sets this sculpture apart?
Well, apart from a head-turning appearance, the ever-shifting surfaces of Whistlestop's Organ Teacher catch the eye and reflect the beautiful hues of the daylight. As Cris Bruch himself mentions, the sculpture was designed to recreate music and offer a moment of tranquil contemplation amid the city's busy streets.
