Perched high above the landscape in Lithuania's Klaipėda region resides Gerduvėn Upelis, a hillfort that stands out from the rest due to its absences of obvious defensive walls. A closer look reveals the remnants of two ditches and a bank along the south-east edge, as well as a fore-work, fortified with a small bank and ditch. This well-aged fortification dates back to the 1st millennium BC to the 13th century, and is suspected of protecting a castle, potentially a royal one, whose remnants lie just beyond the ramparts. However, the question of what other secrets might be hidden beneath this ancient mound lingers.
