Fem fontäner och ett klot: A red and bronze masterpiece in Malmö

Fem fontäner och ett klot, a masterpiece by Sivert Lindblom, stands tall at Gustav Adolfs torg in Malmö. Completed in 2000 as part of the square’s renovation, the artwork features five bronze fonts and a bronze and red granite ball. The funding for the project was unique, with Malmö förskönings- och planteringsförening and Malmö city coming together to finance it. The fonts, cast by Skånska klockgjuteriet in Hannas, have two water level spouts that change in winter to become electric installations. The bowl height of the fonts is adjusted to compensate for the uneven surface of the square. The ball, topped with a grip, symbolizes Malmö city’s coat of arms. It also has two small figures, symbolizing ’optimist’ and ’pessimist’. Two poems are inscribed on the ball, one by Hjalmar Gullberg and one by Herakleitos.
