Linköping Castle is Sweden's oldest preserved secular building, with parts dating back to the medieval period. It was built as a bishop's residence by Bishop Gisle around 1149. Over the centuries, it has served various roles, including a royal stronghold, a prison, and an official government building. In 1527, during the Reformation, King Gustav Vasa confiscated the castle from the church, ending its function as a bishop's residence. The castle today serves as the residence of the County Governor of Östergötland. The castle is situated in Linköping, with Linköping Cathedral opposite it.
