The Abandoned Silva Castle in Barcience, Spain: A Testimony to its Ancient Glory

The **Castle of Barcience** in Barcience, Spain, dates back to the 11th and 12th centuries, when it was first fortified. Later, it served as a stronghold of the House of Silva in the 15th century. The main body of the castle is orthogonal, featuring two circular towers in the western corners and two square towers in the eastern corners, with the NE square tower being the largest one. A relief depicting a lion rampant, the sigil of the House of Silva, is displayed on one of the towers. Despite being designated as a Bien de Interés Cultural through the generic 1949 decree on the protection of the castles of Spain, it has been left in a state of complete abandonment by its owners, with substantial parts missing and defaced by graffiti.
