Castillo de Montefrío, Spain

**A fortress steeped in mystery.** Castillo de Montefrío, built in 1352, has been a fortress for seven centuries, changing hands and even uses. It sits on a rock above the Spanish town of Montefrío. The castle, of the Nazarí epoch, has two fortified enclosures. **The lower enclosure** housed the civil population until the Spanish conquest in 1486. The lower enclosure has remains of dwellings and a cistern excavated in the rock. The wall of this enclosure is of mampostería ripiada with six semicircular towers. **Three of the towers** are on the south-east side, all large and semi-circular in shape. Two more semicircular towers are on the south side, and there is one more tower on the south-west side, rectangular in shape.
