Bañuelo Granada, Spain

The Bañuelo or El Bañuelo, a preserved historic hammam in Granada, Spain, is traditionally dated to the 11th or 12th century. It is located in the Albaicín quarter of the city, on the banks of the Darro River. The architect Torres Balbás led its restoration in 1927-28. The building was a common feature of Muslim cities across the Muslim world, serving both a social and religious purpose. Bathhouses (hammams) of this type were modeled on the Roman bathhouses which preceded them. The Bañuelo is the only hammam in Granada, outside the Alhambra, which has been restored and made accessible to the public. It is one of a dozen historic remains of Islamic bathhouses found in Granada.
