Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls

Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls

One of Rome's Seven Pilgrim Churches, this basilica stands outside the Aurelian walls at the site believed to be the burial place of Saint Paul. Its history is carved with centuries-long renovations and rebuilds.

The Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls, one of Rome's four major papal basilicas, is situated outside the city’s Aurelian Walls at Piazzale San Paolo 1. It is said to mark the burial site of Saint Paul, who was traditionally buried at this location following his execution. The basilica, originally founded by Emperor Constantine the Great in 324, has been undergoing renovations and rebuilds over the centuries. This historic site is not only one of Rome’s Seven Pilgrim Churches, but it is also one of the oldest church sites in Rome, constructed outside the city’s Aurelian Walls. While the present-day basilica, completed in 1840, is the result of a fire that damaged the previous structure in 1823, the basilica has a history that goes back far beyond the 19th-century renovation.
