Bårby Borg: Revealing the Rich History of a Byzantine Coin Find

Bårby Borg, located south of Bårby by in Mörbylånga socken, is one of Öland’s unique fortified sites that utilizes a natural slope. With a diameter of 150 meters, the internal area of Bårby Borg has been cultivated. Findings suggest that Bårby Borg was inhabited during two periods – the Migration period and the Middle Ages – just like two other fortified sites on Öland, Eketorp and Gråborg. The purpose of Bårby Borg included the defense of Öland against Baltic pirates and was in use until the 1600s. Items such as belt buckles, knives, combs, and pottery were found during excavations. A significant discovery was the gold coin minted for the Byzantine Emperor Justin I, who reigned between 518 and 527.
