Bangor's skyline stunner isn't your ordinary water tower - it's the Thomas Hill Standpipe. Constructed in 1897 by the New Jersey Steel and Iron Co, this 50-foot-tall, 75-foot-wide structure holds over 1.7 million US gallons of water. But looks can be deceiving. Besides the tragic accident that cost a 12-year-old boy his life during its construction and the World War II camouflage you'd never guess from the unchanged white, the Standpipe was a 19th-century engineering marvel and a byproduct of the city's water pressure issues. Today, public access is limited, but four times a year, Bangor Water District opens the promenade deck to visitors, offering a unique view of the city.
