The Colby College Museum of Art is an art museum on the campus of Colby College in Waterville, Maine. Founded in 1959 and now comprising five wings, the museum holds nearly 8,000 works across more than 38,000 square feet of exhibition space. The collection specializes in American and contemporary art, with additional select collections of Chinese antiquities, European paintings, and works on paper.
The museum serves as a teaching resource for Colby College and is a major cultural destination for the residents of Maine and visitors to the state. The campus location includes the Bixler Art and Music Center, the Jetté Galleries, the Davis Gallery, the Paul J. Schupf Wing, and the Alfond-Lunder Family Pavilion, which opened in 2013. The pavilion is LEED Silver certified and provides a spacious lobby, a sculpture gallery, a terrace, and new studios for photography and fine art foundation classes.
The museum houses significant works by artists such as Alex Katz, whose collection includes over 800 works, and Richard Serra, whose monumental 4-5-6 sculpture anchors the Paul J. Schupf Sculpture Court. It also houses the Winters Print Collection, the sole repository of Terry Winters's entire archive of prints. Additionally, the museum holds a collection of over 500 works from Peter and Paula Lunder, including forty examples of ritual and mortuary art from the Lunder-Colville Chinese Art Collection.
