In the very heart of Port Elizabeth, where the older reservoir's whispers hold tales of days gone by, stands The Prince Alfred's Guard Memorial. Beautifully Victorian with a touch of Scottish origins, this grand structure adorns the verdant landscapes of St George’s Park. Four corners of this memorial are graced with tablets, each etched with the names of the brave officers and men who paid the ultimate price in the Transkei War of 1877, the Basutoland War from 1880 to 1881, the Bechuanaland War of 1897, and the long Anglo-Boer War from 1899 to 1902. Under each tablet, a laurel wreath lies, signifying their triumphant victory over adversity. It is said that the Honourable Edgar H Walton, MLA, Treasurer General of the Cape Colony, commissioned the construction of this memory in 1907.
