A testament to courage: The Edith Cavell Memorial

The Edith Cavell Memorial is a statue dedicated to Edith Cavell, a British nurse who was executed by the Germans for helping Allied soldiers escape from German-occupied Belgium during the First World War. Sculpted by Sir George Frampton, the statue stands 10 feet high, crafted from white Carrara marble and resting on a grey Cornish granite pedestal. The statue faces a larger grey granite pylon, adorned with a cross and a statue of a mother and child on top. On the pedestal beneath the statue of Cavell is an inscription, corrected in 1924: 'Edith Cavell // Brussels // Dawn // October 12th 1915 // Patriotism is not enough // I must have no hatred or // bitterness for anyone.' The memorial was proposed by a committee and was dedicated in 1915. It was upgraded from a Grade II to a Grade I listing in 2014.
