Emilia Pardo Bazán was a literary titan in early 20th century Spain. She is known for her modernist works and was a pioneering woman writer. A statue was erected in her honor in 1926, close to her Madrilenian address at the calle de la Princesa. The statue, made of limestone and sculpted by Rafael Vela del Castillo, stands next to the modern Jardines de las Feministas. The costs for the statue were funded by popular subscription, with support from Spanish and Argentine women and under the auspices of the Duchess of Alba. The statue was unveiled in a ceremony presided by King Alfonso XIII and Queen Victoria Eugenia, and has become a landmark in Madrid's Centro district.
