The Tragic Journey of Infanta Isabel de Borbón

Isabella de Borbón y Borbón, born on December 20, 1851, as the eldest daughter of Queen Isabella II of Spain and her husband, the Duke of Cádiz, was the presumptive heir to the Spanish throne from 1851 to 1857 and from 1874 to 1880 as Princess of Asturias. At 16, she married Prince Gaetan, Count of Girgenti, son of King Ferdinand II of the Two Sicilies. However, their marriage was fraught with challenges. In 1871, Gaetan took his own life. Infanta Isabel continued as the heiress to the Spanish throne until her sister’s daughter, the Princess María de las Mercedes, was born in 1880. She died on April 22, 1931, at 79 in Paris, France. Her remains were transferred to Spain in 1991 and placed in the Colegiata de la Santísima Trinidad del Palacio Real de La Granja.
