The Enigma of Castillo del Rey: A Fortress of Tales and History in San Vicente

The Castillo del Rey, also known as Castillo de San Vicente, stands as a dominating figure over San Vicente de la Barquera in Cantabria, Spain. Dating back to the 13th century, this fortress forms part of the town's medieval walls and carries a rich history. Legend has it that the first fortification on this site was built during the Descent of Alfonso I of Asturias in the High Middle Ages. The current walls, however, are believed to date from this era. During Medieval times, the castle served as one of San Vicente's defense structures alongside its walls.

Refurbished in the 1990s, the castle now operates as a museum and exhibition space. Notably, it features an unusual elongated structure (50 meters long and 20 meters wide) that adapts to the land's irregularities. The construction showcases ashlar in the corners and openings. Two distinct towers - a square one to the east and a pentagonal one to the west - flank the central body, which once was vaulted. The castle's courtyard is surrounded by an ancient well, a key element in many local legends.
