Cardinal's Hillside Villa: Suburban Summer Retreat of Intellectuals and Artists

Built as a suburban summer residence for Cardinal Fulvio della Corgna in Perugia in 1576, Villa del Colle del Cardinale has been a gathering place for intellectuals and artists of the time, hosting renowned painter Salvio Savini and others.

Villa del Colle del Cardinale, located on a hill in the valley of Rio Caina, near Monte Tezio, was constructed in 1576 as a suburban summer residence by Cardinal Fulvio della Corgna. The villa's architecture is the work of Galeazzo Alessi. It exhibits a rectangular floor plan and three floors, serving as a historic castle. The main floor contains a grand salon, the cardinal's bedroom, various salons, ballrooms, and entertainment areas. Renowned painter Salvio Savini worked on several rooms, creating portraits of Fulvio, his sister Laura, his nephew Diomede, Ascanio II, and his mother Porzia Colonna. The marquesses of Castiglione del Lago, Diomede, Ascanio II, and Fulvio II, as well as other notable collaborators, frequently visited the villa. Among these guests were Scipione Tolomei, secretary of the court, and the poet bernesco Cesare Caporali.
