Vegas High School: A 15-Acre Waste of Space, Sitting Pretty on the National

Step into 2022 and find Vegas High School, now a curious entry on the National Register, a hodgepodge of Aztec, Art Deco, and Native American trinkets. Curious, isn't it?

In 2022, Vegas High School secured a spot on the National Register of Historic Places. Stretching across 15 acres, it's dressed up in a perplexing Neo-Aztec facade – a peculiar blend of Art Deco and Native American influences. The Academic Building and Gymnasium, built in 1986, are the pinnacle of kitschy 'Aztec Moderne'. The exterior walls boast tacky, second-hand Aztec symbols without a care, right down to the gaudy panther statues, complete with precise sizes and tail lengths. In 1986, the district joined the National Register with its Aztec Moderne buildings. Frazier Hall, a 70,000 square foot structure, was added to the register in 2021. The entire district joined in 2022.
