Västra Gymnasiehuset: A School to an Office, Unexpected Twice

Västra Gymnasiehuset, the first building on Riddarholmen in central Stockholm, has seen many transformations. Constructed in 1635, it started life as a school, then moved on to be a cloth storage and a tax office. In the 19th century, the building was rebuilt and repurposed to become an office. The latest renovation, completed between 1846 and 1854, also established a connection corridor to its neighbor, Östra Gymnasiehuset, its counterpart across the water. Today, the building houses the Svea Court of Appeal for a case study in versatile history.
