Unseen London: The Exceptional Statue on the Strand

Standing tall at the bustling east end of London’s Strand, the Gladstone Memorial is not just one more statue lining this city’s storied thoroughfares. This bronze statue, created by the renowned sculptor Hamo Thornycroft between 1899 and 1906, was erected as a national memorial to Sir William Ewart Gladstone, a four-time Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Completed and unveiled in 1906, what sets this statue apart is the incredible detail that goes into its creation, from the imposing figure of Gladstone to the allegorical figures surrounding its base, each depicting a different Virtue.
