HMY *Royal Escape*, initially a collier named **Surprise**, was a royal yacht owned by King Charles II. It carried the king across the Channel to safety after his escape from England to France in 1651. Upon his return to England in 1660, King Charles II bought the ship he had previously travelled on and renamed it *Royal Escape*. The ship, known as a smack, had specific dimensions: 30 feet long, 14 ft 6 inches beam, and drawing 7 feet.
