Medieval Monastery Abandoned a Decade Prior: Sandwell Priory

Sandwell Priory was a medieval Benedictine monastery founded around 1180 near West Bromwich, England. It was established by William, the son of Guy de Offeni, a local landowner, with the support of a powerful local lord, Gervase de Paynel or Pagnell. The monastery was dedicated to St Mary Magdalene. Sandwell Priory was less well-endowed at the outset than some other monasteries. The priory had a rectangular enclosure with boundary ditches, stone buildings, and a stone church. Sandwell Priory was dissolved in 1525, a decade before the Dissolution of the Monasteries under Henry VIII.
