The war memorial chapel of Tempio della Vittoria

A solemn war memorial chapel honoring soldiers who died in World War I

The Tempio della Vittoria, or Temple of the Victory, is a monumental war memorial chapel in Milan, Italy. Commissioned after World War I by the Associazioni Combattentistiche to honor the soldiers from Milan who fought in the war, it was built in 1928. The white marble shrine has eight triumphal arches representing the eight former gates of Milan. Each main side has a relief depicting a battle with a stone urn holding earth from the battlefield. A statue of St Ambrose tramples the seven sins stands at the entrance gates. Despite the damage it suffered from the 1943 Allied bombardment, it was restored to its original grandeur and now retains an ossuary containing bronze plaques listing the names of ten thousand soldiers and patriots who died in the two World Wars.
