The Silent Sentinel of Milan's Museum, a Submarine with a Past

Hidden beneath Milan's museum, a relic from another era, the Enrico Toti submarine, patrols the Mediterranean in silence, leaving mysteries to be whispered among the whispers of the Sicilian strait since the icy decades of the Cold War.

Born in 1964, the Enrico Toti was one of a tiny group, four miniature submarines, duty-bound to the Mediterranean during the chilly times of the Cold War. Their occupation: keeping a guarded eye on the Strait of Sicily, standing by, ready to act when needed, all under the cloak of invisibility. Deactivated in 1992, it was relocated to Milan in 2005 where it now operates as a museum ship at the Museo della Scienza e della Tecnologia. A rogue cat has taken command on board, acting as a sort of 'ghost captain', assisting the submarine in its silent vigil.
