The subterranean lift of Peña del Hierro: journey a century back

In 1903, the Peña Copper Mines Company Limited constructed Malacate del Pozo Maestro de Peña del Hierro, an underground mine shaft elevator, in Nerva, Huelva, Spain. While initially made of wood, it was replaced by an electric motor in 1936. To combat water, three antacid pumps were installed on floors six, eleven, and twelve. Disassembled in 1985, Malacate del Pozo Maestro de Peña del Hierro was later reconstructed by the Fundación Río Tinto and is now listed as a part of the Andalusian Historical Patrimony, specifically as a mine shaft elevator.
