Josep Tomàs Ventosa was born on December 30, 1797, in Vilanova i la Geltrú, and is known for his activities as a businessman and philanthropist. He established his fortune in Cuba, particularly in the commerce of textiles, and later invested in various charitable endeavors in Matanzas, such as schools for children from impoverished families and a public library (1847).
He also served as the alcalde (mayor) of Matanzas on two occasions (1847 and 1852). It is worth noting that between 1840 and 1844, Josep Tomàs Ventosa made his first trip to Spain, where he purchased the properties of the old Capuchin convent in Vilanova i la Geltrú.
