The tallest runestone in Sweden

Levenestenen, the tallest runestone in Sweden, stands outside Stora Levene church in Stora Levene, in Vara commune, Västergötland. The runestone, which is 4.6 meters high, was found in 1927 inside the church’s western wall. Before it was moved to its current location outside the church’s long, graveled entrance, the runestone was divided into two pieces and was originally in the church’s inner wall of the vestry. Some parts were visible on either side of the church’s entrance before it was moved.

The runestone bears an inscribed ornament in the form of a Christian cross in Ringerikestyle on its back. The material of the runestone is granite. The rune band runs in a Romanesque arch with a straight bottom platform and the motif is placed in the middle of the stone. The translation of the inscribed text reads: 'Härulv raised the stone in memory of his sons Var and Torgöt. May God help their souls be well.'
