The stupendous stone: a Bronze Age grave mound in Tun, Västergötland

Located near the Lidköping-Såtenäs airport, the stupendous stone - Stenkullen in Swedish - is an archaeological site in the village of Tun, Västergötland. This immense grave mound, approximately 60 meters in diameter and 7 meters tall, is one of the largest in Sweden, dating back to the Bronze Age. Once, the site was extensively quarried by the church parish, leaving a significant part of it vanished over time. Remnants of an old offering well and a ring-shaped fence of larger stones around the site can still be found. An indication of an Iron Age grave field lies across the road, and the remains of an older settlement can be detected nearby. To the south, there are signs of a grave mound at Tuns kyrka.
