The Ottoman Fort in Mahdia

Located in the city of Mahdia, the Ottoman Fort is a 15th-century military structure built on the site of an ancient palace.

The Ottoman Fort, also known as Borj el-Kébir, is a 16th-century military structure located on a peninsula. It was established in the 15th century under the patronage of Abi Abdallah Muhammad Pasha, following the departure of the Spanish, on the site of an ancient palace.

The fort's layout is based on a four-cornered plan with later additions of corner towers. It is surrounded by a wall that originally had one entrance, though another was built in the 19th century after it was used as a prison. The main gate provides access through a vaulted passage to a courtyard containing vaulted rooms.

In the southeast corner of the courtyard stands a mosque built in an earlier era, which was preserved and integrated into the building. An upper passage, designed as a balcony, offers views of the old city, the sea cemetery, and the old Boni harbor basin.
