The 300-year quest for a bronze George I

The bronze equestrian statue of George I, by John van Nost the Elder, stands outside the Barber Institute of Fine Arts in Birmingham, England. Commissioned by Dublin in 1717 as a gesture of loyalty towards George I, who had just become King of Great Britain and Ireland, it spent time on Essex Bridge in Dublin from 1722. By 1798, it found a home in the gardens of Dublin's official residence, the Mansion House. In 1937, it was moved yet again, this time to the Barber Institute of Fine Arts in Birmingham, as Dublin became the capital of the Irish Free State.
