A ruined castle that held a 14th-century chess piece

Weoley Castle, known historically as the Manor of Welegh, is a Grade II listed building and a Scheduled monument. It was first constructed on Anglo-Saxon lands in 1000. Among its many occupiers were the de Somery family. In its heyday, the castle was a large timber hall between 1200 and 1260, with a kitchen added towards the south of the building during the same period. The building was reconstructed with stone before 1380. However, by the 17th century, the castle was abandoned by the Jervoise family no later than 1603. Only the foundations of the buildings remain today. During archaeological excavations, a 14th-century chess piece was uncovered among the remnants, providing a glimpse into the castle’s past.
