The statue of John Paul II at the Almudena Cathedral

The statue of Pope John Paul II at the Almudena Cathedral in Madrid was built in 1998 to commemorate the solemn consecration of the cathedral by the pope in 1993. Juan de Ávalos, a Spanish sculptor, created the bronze statue that is 3.5 meters tall and represents the pope standing at the facade of the cathedral. The statue was a gathering point for thousands of Catholic Madrid locals when the news of John Paul II's death in 2005 was announced. The Almudena Cathedral took over 100 years to complete, but the bronze statue of the Pope John Paul II was dedicated in 1998 in front of the Cathedral.
