A Lost Town Hidden in a Ruined Romanesque Church

Santa Maria del Palau, an archaeological site in the Spanish province of Girona within the Montgrí mountains, is home to a small Romanesque church in ruins and the remains of a town. It is part of the Inventari del Patrimoni Arquitectònic de Catalunya. While the origins of the town are unclear, it is believed to have been established in the Roman period, around the 2nd century BC. Today, the main part of the site is a one-nave church with a rectangular plan, featuring a pointed vault. The southern and eastern walls still display traces of lateral doors and a window with double esqueyxada. The local government of Torroella de Montgrí took custody of the archaeological ensemble in 2017, after conservation works were carried out on the ruins by the Centre d'Estudis Escalencs.
