The secret church inside Burgos Castle

Iglesia de San Esteban, a former Catholic church, sits on the eastern perimeters of Burgos Castle, built between the late thirteenth and early fourteenth century. Today, it houses the Museo del Retablo, showcasing ornate woodcarvings, intricately carved panels that once decorated churches across the region. Known as retables, these religious artworks were some of the most coveted pieces of art in medieval Europe, becoming an essential aspect of the devotion and craftsmanship of the time.
