The Rockingham Mausoleum, a hidden gem in Wentworth, South Yorkshire, holds an unexpected tale. Commissioned in 1783 by William Fitzwilliam, 4th Earl Fitzwilliam, the mausoleum was built as a tribute to his late uncle, Charles Watson-Wentworth, 2nd Marquess of Rockingham, who passed away in 1782. Standing three-storey tall, the striking sandstone monument is topped by four obelisks at the corners. Inside, eight busts of Rockingham's closest friends, sculpted by Joseph Nollekens, Carrachi, John Bacon, and William Hickey, are housed. After years of deterioration, the Fitzwilliam Wentworth Amenity Trust, a charitable trust formed in 1979, restored the monument, and for the first time in 1991, it was opened to the public.
