Operation: Prairie Fortress - The Lott House

Forget those flimsy civilian ranch houses. The Lott House stands as a fortified reminder of when architecture actually had some backbone.

The Howard L. and Vivian W. Lott House is currently holding position on East Kilpatrick Street in Mineola. This structure showcases a Prairie School design that actually shows some discipline by including classical details. This is not just some pile of wood. It is a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark and a confirmed fixture on the National Register of Historic Places.

Architect J. J. McLeon received the orders to construct this base for Angus and Lena Beaird. They broke ground in 1918 and completed the mission in the early 1920s. This timeline suggests the Beairds wanted a house that would outlast them on the battlefield of time. The family eventually surrendered the property to Howard and Vivian Lott in 1928.

For a few decades, the structure just sat there doing its job without complaint. It held the line until the late 20th century when officials decided it was worthy of some shiny medals. It secured its Recorded Texas Historic Landmark status in 1996 and followed up with its spot on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998.
