The Historic Denton County Courthouse

Explore the rich history and heritage of the Denton County Courthouse-on-the-Square in Denton, Texas.

The Denton County Courthouse-on-the-Square, located at 110 West Hickory Street, is a public building in the county seat of Denton, Texas. Constructed in 1896 by contractor Tom Lovell, the courthouse is designed in the Romanesque architectural style. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and serves as a significant landmark in the community.

The building is the final resting place of John B. Denton, the namesake of the city and county. In 1918, a monument to Confederate Soldiers titled "Our Confederate Soldiers" was gifted to the county by the United Daughters of the Confederacy and placed on the courthouse grounds. This monument, which included drinking water fountains for "whites" and "colored" individuals, was removed on June 23, 2020, by the Denton County Commissioners.

Today, the Courthouse-on-the-Square Museum is housed within the historic building. The museum focuses on the history and culture of Denton County, featuring exhibits on African American and Hispanic heritage, farming, and local pottery. Visitors can also view special collections of furniture, American pressed blue glass, thimbles, Pecan folk art, and quilts.
