Camden Chronicles: A Stone Salute to the Southern Belles in Good Ol' Camden

Got some time in the hicktown of Camden, Arkansas? Drop by the Ouachita County Courthouse for a glimpse of the Confederate Women's Memorial - it's more than just a statue, it's a shoutout to the ladies of the South who stayed loyal to the Confederacy throughout the American Civil War

This 5-foot marble statue, carved from Italian imports, stands proudly outside the courthouse, with a Victorian lady just stepping outta a time machine. The United Confederate Veterans and the United Daughters of the Confederacy footed the bill for this 1915 tribute, seeing it as a nod to the courage and heart the Southern women showed to the Confederate cause. Made of North Carolina granite, the statue's base sits firm, just like those women's contributions still do. Look out for it on the courthouse grounds, that's where they wanna be, symbolizing their impact in their community. It even got added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1996, so it'll be around for the kiddos to remember. Go check it out, give 'em a wink, knowing that even though these Confederate gals are part of history, they'll forever hold a place in our hearts.
