The monastery where kings and assassins met

The Monastery of San Francisco, located in the heart of Burgos, Spain, has been a significant part of the city's history for nearly 900 years. Originally known as the ermita de San Miguel, it was founded by St. Francis of Assisi in 1213, with the approval of King Alfonso VIII of Castile. Over the centuries, it grew into one of the main monasteries in Burgos, its wealth increasing through donations and privileges granted by various monarchs and private benefactors. Although it was damaged during the War of Independence, it continued to serve as an important religious institution until it was desamortized in 1836 and eventually demolished. Today, only the church ruins of the Monastery of San Francisco can be found in Calle San Francisco, near the church of San Gil.
